Hornet Detection and Prevention

Hornet Detection and Prevention

I had the opportunity to collaborate with ‘t Geels Bieke, a group of beekeepers dedicated to protecting their hives from the invasive Asian hornet. This hornet species is a serious threat to honeybees, which play an essential role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Recognizing the importance of safeguarding these vital pollinators, our team set out to design a solution that would address this pressing issue.

The challenge was to create a system capable of detecting the presence of Asian hornets near beehives or tracking pods. We developed an AI-powered device equipped with sensors to identify hornet activity. Once a hornet is detected, the system activates a defensive mechanism, such as an electric harp, to eliminate the threat. Additionally, the system could detect hornets marked by beekeepers. By tracking these marked hornets, the device could locate their nests, allowing for more targeted action.

To complement the device, we developed an online application that allowed users to connect their devices to their profiles. The app aggregated detection data from all connected devices, enabling beekeepers to track the locations of potential hornet nests. Once a nest was confirmed, users could update its status, marking it as either active or inactive, based on whether it had been dealt with. This feature facilitated collaboration among beekeepers, allowing them to share valuable data and work together to tackle hornet infestations.

The combination of defensive and offensive strategies provided a comprehensive solution for beekeepers, allowing them to not only protect their hives but also take proactive steps to eliminate hornet nests. The defensive mechanism shielded the hives from immediate threats, while the offensive approach helped track and neutralize hornet nests before they could cause significant damage.

Looking back, this project was a valuable experience that allowed me to apply technical skills to a real-world challenge. The solution we developed has the potential to make a meaningful impact on beekeeping efforts, helping to protect honeybee populations and support biodiversity for years to come.
